Please check the retreat page what kind of transport is included in the retreat package. Most of the time we include pickup from Quepos airport which is a domestic airport on the coast near Manuel Antonio and Quepos.
United States air carriers serve Costa Rica nonstop from all major gateways like Miami, Atlanta, Houston, Los Angeles, Dallas, Charlotte, New York City and Newark. You will be arriving at Juan Santamaria International Airport (code SJO) in central San Jose.
There are a couple options after arrival:
Take a hotel at the airport for the first night
In case you arrive late you can stay overnight in one of the hotels near the airport like:
- ALOFT San Jose Very trendy: we usually stay there for about $80 though booking.com
- Courtyard Marriott Very nice too but prices vary a lot from $80-$220
- Holiday In Express standard and pricy
- Hampton Inn & Suites standard and pricy
Pick up at the Juan Santamaria International Airport:
We will wait for you at the airport and drive you down to the coast. A air-conditioned bus (max 6 – 10 persons) picks you up at the airport and brings you directly to Manu. Cost about $180 per bus per direction.
Flying to Quepos
After arriving in San Jose you can take a Sansa single-engine commuter flight to Quepos. Please check prices since they vary a lot with season and the time you book but expect to pay between $60 – $120 per person.
If you come from a other destination in Costa Rica like Arenal, Limon, Nosara, Tambor, Palma Sur and Tamarindo or even from Bocas del Torry in Panama you can use the Interconnections from Nature Air.
For bigger groups (5-18 pax) or out of convenience you might look into a Nature Air charter flight from San Jose to Quepos.
Driving from San Jose to Dominical
If you like long leisurely drives through the mountains, you’ve come to the right country! The roads are in good shape, but plan on 3 hours to cross over the mountains and arrive at the beach. The drive from San José takes you through stunning scenery on the Pan-American Highway. You can drive through high mountain passes, and the country’s largest cloud forest, with the worlds last remaining, sustainable habitat for the endangered quetzal.
We can arrange for the rental car company to pick you up from the Airport in San Jose and you take the drive over the mountains to Dominical yourself in your rented 4×4.
Total travel time from San Jose by car: about 3 1/2 hours.
Take a bus or a shuttle service to Dominical or Quepos
From the Plaza Viquez bus station in downtown San Jose, buses leave to and from Quepos, several times a day.Tickets are about $8 per person one-way to the Quepos/Manuel Antonio. There is no boarding at San Jose Airport. You must take a taxi to Plaza Viquez.
Take a taxi from the airport
When arriving from another country to Costa Rica, you will see several orange taxis outside the airport. These are all legal taxis and they work for the airport. You will be approached by many people who want to help you get where you want to go. The cost from San Jose to Quepos is around $120. You may be able to negotiate a lower price.
